Why I love Valentine......
Valentine comes once in a year...just like anniversaries and birthdays. Over the years February 14th has been celebrated as world's love day!!!! A day where lovers, admirers both open and secret and those in relationships take their love to the next level by showing how much they care via gifts such as chocolates, cakes, roses and strongly worded cards. For the benefit of those who do not know how valentine came about...here is a little history....
"St. Valentine's Day began as a customary greek public worship by a specific religious group of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her. Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid"
Over time, most people looked forward to receiving a token of love from their admirers and lovers on this special day. Valentine is a day to woo that special person and show them how much you care.....I overheard from the grapevine that ladies generally become nicer to their toasters just to guarantee the receipt of cakes and chocolates while some guys shy away from this imposed responsibility by breaking up their relationship before the d-day. Nevertheless, valentine has come to stay, schools celebrate by requesting that their pupils put on a touch of red, offices also serve their clients cakes and chocolates, while restaurants, hotels, confectioneries - flowers and greeting cards businesses, generally record their highest sales during this period. As for me, I love valentine because it is one of those few days when I do not want to do anything, just because of the excitement in the air. The whoos and aahs as gifts are unwrapped, proposals are received, cakes and chocolates are shared....the special red lipsticks worn by ladies, the dinner gist and romantic tales that follow. The extravagance by smitten lovers (I wanna know Beyonce & Jay-Z , Kimye, Chris & Rihanna, Omotola & hubby's gifts ) and also another opportunity to show my better half how much he means to me. Happy Valentine Day.....my one and only valentine forever.....kisses baby!!!!
Here is a sample of a modern day valentine poem.....I didn't write it!!!!!!
The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you
I remember those growing up days, when we pray that those people we wanted surprised us on valentine's day. For the people out there....praying, wishing and hoping that it may be this year....I pray with you and if it isn't today, just relish in the fact that it may be - because it isn't meant to be......Happy Vals day from moi
