The new Kindle Paperwhite was unveiled yesterday by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos during a press event. It’s reportedly been in development for 4 years, and is designed to evenly distribute light across the display. It boasts a markedly improved 212 ppi screen (current e-ink Kindles clock in at 160 ppi). The PaperWhite offers capacitive touch, an updated interface, and 8 weeks of battery life with the light on. It weighs 7.5 ounces and is about a millimeter thinner than the current Kindle Touch.
There’s also the inclusion of a thoughtful new feature. Taking cues from media player interfaces, Paperwhite will display how much time is left in your current chapter — it constantly adjusts the time remaining by tracking your reading speed.
The PaperWhite goes on sale for $119, and starts shipping on October 1st. A 3G version of the Kindle PaperWhite is also available to pre-order for $179. Both models include Whispersync and free cloud storage at no extra charge.
