Birthdays come once in a year...so does mine!!!!

Today is my birthday......how time flies. I can remember how on the first day of January the 26th of September seemed so far away and suddenly, the day is here. Hmmmm, it is quite surprising that I have not been so excited at the thought of my birthday like the previous years. As far back as 3 years ago, it was compulsory for me to have a little get together for my birthday but all of a sudden, I am just content with thanking God for another year added to my life. I will attribute this to my close to 30years crisis once again but it doesn't leave out the fact that I am expecting cakes and presents though.

Now about cakes and presents, my mind wanders back to how birthdays have been celebrated over the years. I remember when we were in secondary school (that is how far my memory can go)...we would give our friends birthday presents no matter how small it was. It could be a tablet of soap, an item of clothing, hand made birthday cards, stationeries, note books, name it - I was in a boarding school. As we approached our senior secondary years, we graduated to more chic gifts and even mandated our parents to include birthday cards in our list of school items. Popularity then was measured by how many cards you received from your friends.  Apart from that, we also had the habit of making the celebrant remember the pain that his/her mum went through on the day of delivery- why that was our business, I have no idea and still do not.

So we generally beat the person-mildly of course,  but some people will definitely go overboard to settle some beefs no doubt, poured dirty water, garri etc on them. It was all fun and it made the day memorable. University days were much more interesting, we all have real grooves depending on how much you could raise from your parents. Hmmmm, very lovely memories....how technology has changed things.

With the advent of telephones, the birthday cards stopped rolling in.....it was much more chic for old friends to give you a surprise call just to wish you a happy birthday. The text messages came in droves, the more the better, Later it was messages posted on Facebook walls, mentions on twitters and now to the more interesting one, display picture updates on Blackberry. How times have changed!!!!! Regardless on how one is wished a happy birthday, birthday's are a day of joy and a day to appreciate life. So let the good wishes pour in......with cards, presents et all of course!!!!

Whoohoo!!!!! It's my birthday!!!!
