Diary of a Lagos Working Housewife - Part 3

So about my driver, he resumed on the 2nd day after I resumed for work. I had been in search of a driver way before my resumption date and I told everyone around to assist with one. My first candidate was a young guy from Anambra who wanted to become a driver because of the ban on motorcycles on some select Lagos roads. His driving experience is less than mine, yet he wanted to collect 50k per month.  While interviewing him, I imagined the crazy drivers that were on Lekki-Epe expressway, the many hazardous roundabouts along the expressway and all the madness that stresses even me as a semi-experienced driver.  It was a definite no-no!!!
I had always wanted an elderly person to drive me though, i.e a man with some form of responsibilities so I can be sure of his going concern ability. Who would blame me? Well my second candidate matched this description, thus I was very excited at the prospect of interviewing/meeting him. He also wanted to collect 50k but I was more inclined to pay him given that he met my requirements.  All this was before I found out the going rates for personal drivers in Lagos sha.  Anyways, he never showed up for the interview/meeting and all effort to reach him on the day of the interview, and the day after proved abortive.  He finally called us a week later but at the time, I was too peeved to even deal with him. Need I say, DH handles all these difficult tasks because, like I mentioned earlier, I am melodramatic.

So when Dare (not real name) showed up at my work place for his interview, I was almost desperate for a driver.  My office’s car pack is about 5mins walk from the office building and with my heels.,..erm it isn’t a cool walk.  I interviewed him with a good friend of mine, who agreed that he was fit for the job. Given that we had both undergone interviewing skills training, it was quite an objective decision. And yes, he started work on the same day..that was how enthusiastic he was!!!
Ok, one thing you need to know about Dare is that he was recommended by my aunt’s driver.  It was after a while that I found out that he was squatting with him and I was so grateful to my aunt for this. So I was a bit surprised when she called me one day to warn off my driver, as he was sending love text messages to her house help.  I did what every good person would do, spoke to my driver about it, of course he didn’t deny, he just stated that they were just playing. So I advised him to ensure that his love affairs are as  far away from home as possible…..if only I knew….
The next call I got from my aunt was not pleasing at all, as it is, her house help is pregnant and the lady is a bit confused as to who is responsible between my aunt's driver and my own driver. I do not even want to go into the details of the love triangle. If truth be told, my driver has been very responsible with carrying out his assigned duties, he is punctual to work, does not overspeed unless I scream that he does - well I wake up late most of the time. And he is quite handy when it comes to assisting with little errands while I am at work.  However, my aunt is hurt about the actions of the two guys and has judged them both irresponsible.  In solidarity to my aunt, I am considering sacking him....what do you suggest????
